It is best for both your Naples auto insurance premiums and your health to avoid distractions while behind the wheel. The data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that in 2009 alone, 5,474 people were killed by distracted drivers, while an additional 448,000 people were injured. With these statistics in mind, you may be able to see how vital it is to remain focused while driving. Here are a few tips to help you avoid the common issues that distract drivers:

  • Try to avoid fiddling with the radio. Before driving, programming your favorite stations and setting your CD case within arm’s length can help prevent you from fumbling to find some good tunes.
  • Drivers who decide to listen to music need to make sure the volume is low enough that it does not drown out the honk of a horn or the screech of a tire, which are vital warnings of a potential collision.
  • Do not brush your hair, put on makeup, or do any other personal grooming while driving. This is a very dangerous activity because it can take your eyes off the road.
  • It is easy to get lost on long trips. Allow one of your passengers to read the map. When traveling alone, you should pull over to get your bearings.

Allowing yourself to be distracted at the wheel could cost you your life. Even if you are lucky enough to get out of a collision unscathed, you may still have to face certain consequences, such as an increase in your Naples auto insurance rate.
